No One Likes the CFP and What the CFB Committee Should Do

Every single team in any sport does not desire anything more than the win the Championship. College Football may be just the most restrictive league on how someone can get to the championship game. Until recently, only the top two ranked teams could make the Championship game (BCS). The top two ranked teams were always the SEC champion and either the SEC runner-up or the top ACC and Big12 teams. This meant that top non-SEC two-loss teams had a hard chance at making the BCS and SEC teams were guaranteed one or sometimes both spots. In fact, of the last 10 College Football Championships, an SEC team has won 8 times. In 2014, the College Football committee was formed in trying to make it possible for more teams to make the Championship game. They implemented a four-team bracket in hopes of making the road to the Championship game more interesting. It didn't.

We've seen a reoccurring pattern in the four-team College Football Playoffs. The top four ranked teams make the cut and some teams are just favored to be ranked in the top four. The top two SEC teams don't have a hard time making the cut. The other two spots are usually filled by the top Big10 , ACC, or Big12 team. Since the creation of the College Football Playoffs, of the 16 possible spots and 30 conferences, all but two teams (Oregon and Washington) have been either an SEC, Big10, Big12, or ACC team. This year isn't any different. A Big12 team and 3 SEC teams made College Football Playoffs in a controversial call by the committee. This means that at least one SEC team is guaranteed to make the Championship Game. So moving forward, what could the CFB Committee do? Make college football like the NCAA March Madness Bracket. With an all-inclusive 32-team playoffs, it actually gives an incentive again to be a Top 25 team, other than bragging rights. The way the post-season is currently structured, many teams don't care about "normal" bowl games if they can't get a chance at being #1. This results in many players skipping the bowl games and many coaches leaving right before the bowl games. This idea isn't likely going to be implemented by the Committee but if the rest of America gets tired of just watching SEC teams play the bowl game, the Committee might actually be called out. We'll just have to wait to find out. The semi-finals of the College Football Playoffs are played on New Year's.
